Getting Around Atlanta: Taxis, Cars and Efficient MARTA

That introduction starts with your arrival at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport or ATL. MARTA has its own aboveground station inside the main atrium building between the two terminals. Just follow the signs to the west end and you will have no problem finding it.

The Ground Transportation Center at Hartsfield-Jackson, outside the doors of that same west end, can arrange taxi and limousine service. There are also white courtesy phones for checking on hotel shuttle schedules. The rental car counters are inside the atrium building, but the shuttles to the actual car lots pick up customers at the GTC.

Once you get into the city, MARTA spider webs out in all directions, using a combination of light rail and bus routes. The light rail system has two lines. The north-south segment runs from the airport thorough downtown and up to North Springs and Doraville. The east-west line goes from Indian Creek to Hamilton E. Holmes. Service hours are Monday-Friday 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., and on weekends and holidays to 12:30 a.m.

More than 150 bus routes cover the Atlanta area, coordinating with the light rail for easy transfer. Unless you go past the city limits, it is possible to get to almost all of the attractions using this combination of bus and light rail. Buses run from 5 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. Monday-Friday, and to 1 a.m. on weekends and holidays. MARTA offers single-ride tickets and one to four-day visitor passes that allow for unlimited riding for the days purchased. These are sold in Ride Stores throughout Atlanta and at Breeze Vending machines in each rail station.

Taxis are another option for getting around Atlanta, though more expensive. They may be the preferred choice at night, especially for party goers, with some clubs closing as late as 3 a.m. Downtown and the Buckhead district have set fares for traveling within their areas. Flat rates are also in force to and from the airport.

Visitors wishing to drive can rent cars either on arrival at the airport or from agencies scattered around town. Driving on the interstates and outside of Atlanta city limits is usually pretty easy apart from the weekday rush hours, generally from 6 to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 7 p.m. Downtown Atlanta requires payment for parking. The streets are well laid out but a good map and directions help. Both are complimentary at car rental counters.
