Atlanta Tours: Exploring the American South’s Cultural Capital

A popular place to start tours of Atlanta is the Olympic Centennial Park. The park features ringed fountains based on the Olympic symbol that “perform” a choreographed routine to music. In the immediate vicinity are Philips Arena and the famous Georgia Dome. Also nearby is the CNN Center which offers very interesting tours. Not far from the CNN Center is the city’s State Capitol which dates from the late 19th century and also offers guided tours.
As the home of Coca-Cola, Atlanta features the interactive World of Coca-Cola Museum. Visitors who are more business-inclined may, in fact, enjoy taking in some of the many Fortune 500 company headquarters that are found throughout the Atlanta metro area.
Other city tours take in the vintage district of Virginia Highland, an area that houses many eclectic specialty shops, boutiques and galleries. The neighbourhood also offers a very pleasant walk along Highland Avenue that features some beautiful historical homes. Nearby is the Jimmy Carter Center with its manicured gardens and museum documenting President Carter’s time in the Oval Office. Other popular museums that figure prominently in many tours of Atlanta include the Fernbank Musuem of Natural History, the Marin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Imagine It! Children’s Museum of Atlanta.
One of the most popular Atlanta tours is a half-day trip out of the city to Stone Mountain Park, an area that features many recreational activities and camp grounds. The park boasts of a beautiful natural habitat, walking and biking trails and a massive granite boulder featuring the world’s largest bas-relief sculpture (a representation of Confederate icons Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and President Jefferson Davis). A gondola ferries visitors up the boulder. The park also features a golf course, a scenic railroad and an antique car and toy museum. Visitors can experience the park as part of an organized tour, but the site is also very well serviced by public transportation from Atlanta. Also just outside of the city is the Atlanta Cyclorama. The site dates from the late 1800s and depicts the Battle of Atlanta during the American Civil War.
