Things to Do in Atlanta: Gateway to the Scenic South

While it is a modern and bustling city, Atlanta has preserved its historic sights for a fascinating glimpse into a rich southern history. What started out as a remote railway junction is now one of the best cities in the U.S.

A walk around the city taking in its famous sights and excellent museums, including the Atlanta History Center and the Carter Center, can help you unlock this remarkable place.

There are countless things to see in Georgia's capitol, but two of the newer tourist attractions are among the most popular Atlanta sights. The Georgia Aquarium, which claims to be the biggest aquarium in the world, and The World of Coca-Cola are right at the top of the list of famous Atlanta attractions.

The arts scene is thriving in Atlanta, and boasts excellent galleries such as the High Museum of Art and the Georgia Museum of Contemporary Art.

For a unique mix of shopping and entertainment, Underground Atlanta is definitely worth a look. Situated under the streets of downtown Atlanta, it hosts a bustling market, entertainment zones and fun activities for all the family.

Add to this great Atlanta sights such as the Botanical Gardens, Zoo Atlanta and the many beautiful parks that dot the city and you will find plenty to keep you busy. In addition, just east of the city is the world's largest piece of granite, Stone Mountain.

The beautiful Smoky Mountains present great hiking and rafting opportunities for the nature lover. Alternatively, you could learn more about the making of the classic movie “Gone With The Wind” on a tour of the real South. Atlanta, in fact, hosted the premiere of the movie in 1939.
